What is colloidal silver?

Colloidal silver is a suspension of tiny particles of pure silver in purified water. At Health is a Choice we make ours in the UK using double-purified water — reverse osmosis, then distillation — and bottle it in dark glass. It is sold for external use only.

This guide covers what colloidal silver is, how we make it, ppm strengths, dropper vs spray vs refill, bottle sizes, dark glass and how to store it.

This complete UK guide explains what colloidal silver is, how it is made, what ppm means, and how to choose a strength, format and size.

Everything below is about the product and how we make it. We make no medical claims, and our colloidal silver is sold for external use only.

Nothing here is medical advice — if you have a health concern, please speak to your GP or pharmacist.

What colloidal silver is

Colloidal silver is simply pure silver, broken into extremely small particles and suspended in purified water. The silver does not dissolve like sugar in tea; instead the tiny particles stay spread evenly through the water, which is what gives a colloid its name.

The water matters as much as the silver. Ordinary tap water carries minerals and other dissolved content, so we purify ours first (more on that below).

The result is a clear liquid that is mostly water, with a small, measured amount of silver in it.

For the full explainer, see What is colloidal silver? A plain-English explainer.

How we make it

We make our colloidal silver in the UK, the way we would want it for our own family. We don’t purify our water once — we do it twice.

It is first cleaned by reverse osmosis, then distilled on top of that, before we suspend real silver in it and bottle it in dark glass — never plastic.

Most colloidal silver is made with water that has been through one purification step, if any. We use two.

First, reverse osmosis forces the water through an ultra-fine membrane that strains out dissolved minerals and impurities.

Then we distil what is left — boiling it to vapour and re-condensing it, so only the cleanest water carries through. Two stages, every batch, before a single particle of silver goes in.

For the step-by-step, see How colloidal silver is made.

Understanding ppm: 10, 100 and 200

PPM stands for “parts per million” and is simply a measure of how much silver is in the water. A 10 ppm liquid contains ten parts of silver for every million parts of water; 200 ppm contains twenty times as much.

We offer three strengths — 10 ppm, 100 ppm and 200 ppm — so you can choose the concentration you want. The number simply tells you how much silver is in the water.

For a fuller breakdown, see PPM explained: 10, 100 and 200 ppm.

Choosing a format: dropper, spray or refill

Our colloidal silver comes in three formats, all in dark glass:

  • 100ml dropper — a glass pipette for measured, controlled application.
  • 100ml spray — a fine mist for covering a wider area.
  • 500ml refill — the larger bottle for topping up your dropper or spray.

Many people keep a dropper or spray to hand and a 500ml refill in the cupboard. To compare them, see Dropper, spray or refill: choosing your format.

Choosing a size: 100ml or 500ml

The 100ml bottles — dropper and spray — are the everyday application sizes. The 500ml is the refill: a larger, better-value bottle for topping up your dropper or spray, so you reorder less often.

A 100ml is the easy way to start; add a 500ml refill when you want to keep topped up.

For help deciding, see 100ml vs 500ml: which size is right?

Why dark glass, never plastic

We bottle every product in dark glass, and we do it on purpose. Light can affect colloidal silver over time, and dark glass shields the contents far better than clear bottles.

Glass is also inert, so nothing leaches from the container into the liquid the way it can with plastic.

It costs more and it is heavier to post, but we think it is the right way to bottle a product like this. You can read more in Glass vs plastic: why we bottle in dark glass.

Storing colloidal silver

Keep your colloidal silver in its dark glass bottle, somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight — a cupboard is ideal. Keep it away from extremes of heat, and keep it out of reach of children.

The dark glass does much of the work; a steady, shaded spot does the rest.

For more detail, see How to store colloidal silver.

The story of silver

People have valued silver for thousands of years.

It appears in the cups and vessels of ancient civilisations, was carried by explorers on long voyages, and is still used today in everything from electronics to water filters.

It is a metal with a long and fascinating history.

We tell that story in full in The story of silver: from ancient vessels to modern day.

Common questions

What does ppm mean?

Parts per million — how much silver is in the water. We offer 10, 100 and 200 ppm, and you choose the concentration you want.

Will it turn me blue?

Argyria — the blue-grey skin tinge you may have seen in photos — is real, but it is rare and comes from taking in very large amounts of silver over a long time.

The best-known case, the American known as the “blue man”, drank around a 10oz glass of homemade colloidal silver a day, sometimes twice a day, for more than twelve years, and rubbed it into his skin daily as well.

That is nothing like normal use of a bottle like ours. It is exactly why we sell our colloidal silver for external use only, make no medical claims, and do not recommend ingesting it.
